6) Little Big Planet PSP: I don’t think any story of LBP is bad persay, so I actually really liked this one. However, it just has the least amount of story overall. There is a lot of creativity when it comes to both level design and the implementation of the creator curators. For instance, it’s cool how before you even get to meet the creator curator of the third world, the genie, you have to get his lamp back from a monkey. And it’s cool how after that he helps you through the rest of the level. I think the whole idea of the Dreamtime being the basis of the ideas making up Little Big Planet is really interesting, and could honestly make this game work as a sort of prequel to the original if they wanted to run with that. But there is no villain, the main plot is making sure each of the curators get to the carnival at the end, which is the final level. There are a lot of fun level ideas and characters that I remember fondly, but the story isn’t anything special. 5) Little Big Planet: This game, similar to the PSP game, has little emphasis on story. But it does a number of things that elevate it over that game as well. For starters, it actually has a villain carrying the storyline and ending with a boss fight to cap off the game. This villain can be seen in most levels kidnapping objects and characters so the story can never be completely forgotten about. I also really love how each level transitions to the next so naturally. The King gives you a submarine and you start the next world by launching out of the water. You end that world by going into a meerkat tunnel and emerge from said tunnel into the wedding. Frida gives you a lift to visit her uncle, who then gives you a ride in his car to visit his friend in the city, and so on. It makes it feel like a true journey around the world. One could argue the ending is anticlimactic with you not really defeating the Collector so much as becoming his friend, but I think it’s perfect for LBP. Plus, you get a climactic fight anyway and a cool level where you free everyone you’ve met over the journey from cages. 4) Little Big Planet Karting: They didn’t have to go this hard for a kart racer. It’s actually a great story. It’s limited by the kart racing genre but it’s still good. The Hoard, like many of my favorite LBP antagonists, fundamentally go against one of the three pillars of LBP. They hoard things rather than share them. And they are kept consistently within the player’s mind because they are your opponents for every race and challenge. Add onto that some fun level themes and an actually epic final boss and you’ve got a nice story on your hands. 3) Little Big Planet 3: This game’s story may have been my top choice if there was just more content. The actual story and its ideas are great. Newton is a fun tragic antagonist, the creator curators are all full of personality and fun to see interacting with Sackboy and the others, and the levels all have fun mini stories in them like climbing a giant rocket or breaking into a casino. However, it just feels like something was missing. The new characters don’t get as much use as you’d hope. Each gets a level in their world, a side level in that world, a boss fight, a piece of the final level, and a piece of the final boss. You won’t see these characters in levels after the world they’re introduced in until the final world, which makes them seem like they have less of a role in the story than they should. Swoop doesn’t even get their own boss to fight. No levels ever mix and match the skills of two characters. They introduced doors that let you switch between characters, but these are never used within levels. A DLC pack released later on even has a level where at the start you can choose to play as either Sackboy or Toggle and find different collectibles based on who you pick, but you are never allowed to bring another character into a story level not meant for them. Also, the story only has four worlds, which is the least of any game in the series. And the curators aren’t connected in any way like the alliance in LBP 2 or the puppets in LBP Vita. I like the story, but I wanted more. 2) Little Big Planet 2: This story is just great. The characters are all charming and aren’t limited to just their world, instead accompanying you and developing as they go. Avalon gets humbled, Larry and Victoria start a romance, Clive gains confidence, etc. The Negativitron is maybe the most iconic villain of the series. The level design is also allowed to get really crazy with the introduction of new power ups and vehicles. The final world is incredibly climactic too, starting with Sackboy using zero gravity on a crashing ship to send off escape pods, then traveling from the wreckage through enemy defenses to free the Alliance, then leading an army on a rescue mission for Avalon culminating in a climb up a giant robot and...its just great. But there’s one I like a little bit more. 1) Little Big Planet Vita: This game basically does what LBP 2 did but has an even better atmosphere. The world of Carnivalia is unique and beautiful, and offers up many unique set pieces. The story being told both fits the world of LBP while offering up its own spin by being chilling and filling you with a sense of dread. This is especially apparent when reaching the final stages and seeing the origin of the Hollows and hearing a voice recording of the Puppeteer realizing his mistakes which is actually somewhat scary. Not to mention this game actually has jump scares to really sell the Hollows as a more inhuman and monstrous force. What I really like though is how the creator curators start of seemingly unconnected but are revealed in a twist at the end to be the lost puppets that drove the Puppeteer mad. It’s a neat twist that recontextualizes the story, and I also liked how every character made it to the ending world in their own way based on things you helped them set up that didn’t go as well for you.
As some of you may know, the LittleBigNetwork forum has permanently shut down due to an internal error explained here. Today I kinda went on a nostalgia trip and wanted to look at some old LBP fansites, like LBPFrance, LBPlanetarium... (first one shut down but is still read only and the other is for sale). But for some reason, even knowing the fact that it was gone, I still wanted to go to LittleBigNetwork.com. And to my surprise.... The website still exists..... but everything is in chinese?!?!?!? I very quickly spotted that in the top left corner is a link to a website called 123.as ("as" being the national domain for American Samoa, makes sense for a chinese website...) Accessing it will redirect you to another website called 140354.com, which seems to be a casino/gambling website. Looking at websites like whois and Website Reporter I was able to find some infos:
LBN's website is registered under 2 e-mails; one which seems to be a registrar e-mail ([email protected], domain marketplace maybe linked to GoDaddy?) and another one which could be very interesting.
A certain "zhouxiaoqin" is the registrant for 123.as. Searching the name on Google reveals the same name was used for another website. At best, it's just a coincidence, or it's something much worse like identity theft.
140354.com blocked their who.is information.
Let's go back to the first point; the LittleBigNetwork e-mails. I said one of them was interesting, it's called "[email protected]". From what I found, Sina is sort of like the chinese Yahoo: the main website is a portal for three regions of the world but it also has an E-mail service, so we can definitely confirm it's a personal email address and not a company one. A great thing about Website Informer is that you can look up the domains associated with an email address. Entering the "woo" address on a website, we can see tens, and maybe hundreds of registered websites (warning: some are nsfw) Looking all of this leads me to believe the domain was hacked. I asked the (still running) LBN Twitter account if they simply sold the domain but no answer so far. It's a huge rabbit hole and I invite anyone more qualified than I am on the subject to look into it.
